DIY Repaint Tips
- The first thing you need to do on your repaint project is to pick the wooden furniture that you wanted to repaint. Prepare the area where you will be doing your DIY project.
- Stay on a well-ventilated area during your repaint project. Use a cloth or newspaper and settle it on the floor, this will protect your floor from paint spills and other mishaps.
- Make sure that you wear a mask and gloves for your own safety.
- The next thing you need to do is to remove all the hardware from the furniture that you are repainting. If you are repainting a chair or a table remove the foam and if you are trying to repaint your door or cabinet make sure to remove the hinges, knobs, and other hardware.
- Once you are done removing the hardware present on the furniture, the next thing you need to do is to patch up the holes and cracks that are visible on the furniture’s surface. This will ensure you of a smooth and easy painting job since there will be no holes and cracks that can affect the finished product.
- You can now start the sanding process. Sand the furniture first to remove all the existing varnish or lacquer that are still stuck on the furniture. This will make it easier for you when you will start to paint using a primer coat. Do not forget to wipe the furniture off of dust and other particles one you are done with the sanding.
Primer and Finishing
You are now ready for the priming process!
- Use a brush or spray paint gone and smoothly apply the first coating of primer on the wood surface. Allow the coat to dry first before applying the second coat to the furniture.
- You can then start applying a finishing coat on the furniture surface. It is much better to gradually apply a light coating to the furniture rather than painting it heavily once. Several light coats will make your end product much better.
- You can use paint rollers on smooth surfaces and use a small paintbrush in painting edges, nooks, and crannies. Let the paint dry before adding up a new layer of finishing paint.
- Put the hardware back on the wooden furniture after you are done. You can also decide to replace the hardware with new ones to give the DIY project a much better look.
- Let it be cured for a few days to make sure that no cracks and other paint problems will occur once you use the repainted wooden furniture again.
